Quote of the Day

Said Jada Pinkett Smith of award acceptance speeches during the opening monologue of tonight's BET Awards:

"Do not thank God if you can't show or perform your work in church. Some of you just need to thank your manager and keep it movin'."

Oh wow! LOL

Do you know what kind of reaction from the audience/performers she received for that?

I love it!

Whee! I like that woman, she's got guts. And smarts too, apparently.

Posted by: songstress7 at June 28, 2005 10:26 PM

What a great quote!!

The only thing to temper my reaction though is that I had heard her husband, Will Smith, say that they have an open marriage meaning they can have other partners??? I saw that posted at RightNation a few months back...did anyone else hear this?? Hopefully it was just a false quote and not true.......

Regardless, this is a great line and totally Biblical by Jada!!!

Actually, the Will Smith quote is taken out of context...I'll comment more later when I'm not sleepy.

Susan: reaction was laughter.

True, it was out of context. The same goes for the quote that Jesse Lee Peterson is saying about Will Smith in calling for a boycott of his movies and music.

Finally, someone from Hollywood with an IQ higher than 10.

That was priceless. I laughed so hard I fell outta my chair.

Loved that quote.

Posted by: Teem at June 29, 2005 1:19 PM

'bout time somebody said it.

Posted by: Jon at June 29, 2005 3:12 PM

WOW! I can't believe that she had the guts to say that--a strong woman indeed.

So, how many people thanked their 'god' anyway?

Posted by: Alex at June 29, 2005 4:56 PM

A few STILL thanked God..and they were the ones that shouldn't have. They just don't get it. As far as I'm concerned, Gladys Knight is the only one who should have let His name come out of her mouth!

Just wanted to say that although I'm diametrically your political opposite, you do have a nice site. As for Jada's quote, perhaps we should separate all art/commerce from God? I can feel grateful to God that I have been given the talent to write, however that doesn't mean that what I write is derived from God's inspiration. And perhaps that the same way we should look at artists who may produce work that doesn't seem inspired by God.

She also got into trouble for speaking at Harvard a while back and saying something along the lines that a woman can have a career and be a good wife and mother as well. Some students complained that her remarks were too "heteronormative". There's a new word for you.

Whew! Amen to that! One of your favorite quotes applies well to this...

"Now that'll preach!"

I have a whole new appreciation for Jada now. :)

Can you help me out with understanding this whole Kanye West thing? He was lauded today as the "thinking man's rapper" during the Live 8 broadcast from Philadelphia. Yet what he thought so important to talk about during an after-performance interview is that his parents always taught him that 1) AIDS is a "planted" disease for the purpose of genocide against black people (who set this diabolical scheme in motion he forgot to mention); and 2) crack cocaine was invented (by law enforcement, he sort-of alludes) to cause the demise of the popular movement/uprising being set in motion by the Black Panther Party.

Kanye, nice to meet you. Peace out already! And would somebody hand me a pressie on what he's talking about?
