Ambraradio

You have no idea what a sap I feel like when I slack on updating this site. Lots (and I mean lots) to say, but little energy to say it. For the record, I'm mentally exhausted. I have some big decisions coming down the pipe with regards to writing (one of which includes turning off the blessed television), and I'm somewhat resistant to change. It's mentally taxing. Being unemployed is taxing. For one second yesterday, I almost wished I was back living in the dorm in college. ALMOST. Ha ha.

By way of announcement, I'll be on the radio here on Sunday evening on the show "Toward Tradition" with Rabbi Daniel Lapin. I am told the interview will also be made available online.

Now the world can hear me mis-pronounce my own website. I have yet to decide how to pronounce "Nykola". When I say it, it usually sounds like some new kind of soda. Just curious as to how you all pronounce it in your brain?

Updates coming shortly, I promise. I may have to start blogging on the weekends again, with the rest of the nerds.

I always pronounce it "Nickala." Nick like the name and "ola" like with my accent. Ha ha.

Hey, Ambra.

When I talk about your site with others, I say, phonetically, ni - KO' - la. Short vowel sounds on the first and third syllables. Long "O" on the second syllable.

I guess you could also pronounce it emphasizing your last name and first initial: NICK - uhl A.

I pronounce the same as Sam; of course being from the south you know we can't talk intelligently so I could be wrong:-)

I can attest that unemployment is very draining. Enervating. And in those short bursts of quiet desperation that smack randomly, staccato-like, throughout the day, you feel like a completely useless turd. Rejected even for fertilizer. Man, university was definitely the last refuge of carefreedom.

Alls I say is stay up, hopeful and patiently diligent. You know your lord will reward your steadfastness.

As for pronunciation, I too assumed it was like Ricola (as in Reeeeeee-coh-laaaah the cough-drop medicine).

Ah, well, an Ambra by any other name...

I'll keep you in prayer for your decision-making and I'm looking forward to hearing the interview! I must have been really sleeping on the pronunciation of your name. All this time I've been calling you Frank.

Live and learn!

No more TV? what would my day be like if you don't "cry load and spare not" against to raunchy show that I probably love but shouldn't be watching anyway.

When I hear your site's name in my mind's ear, I think of a yodeler in The Alps.

before anybody asks...can I be your agent?

Posted by: Bijan C. Bayne at January 27, 2005 4:28 PM

Best Pronounce it Southern - NIGH-KOLER. What is your REAL last name?

Posted by: SharonB at January 27, 2005 4:33 PM

Like Doug... I always think of the Ricola commercials with the Swiss people and the horns.

It's good to see that things are moving right along for you. Good luck!

I say -really think - Nykola - to rhyme with Ricola. First time I've thought of it that way -I certainly don't have a mental picture of you in the Alps.

I have started designing a blog and reading everything I can on how to do it right. One of the things that bothers me though is the pressure to post so frequently. I am a single working mom and had decided to post mainly on the weekends with very short posts during the week if I could.

So all of that to say...blogging on the weekends is great!

You have a great site, a definite style, and I love reading it.

Rabbi Lapin has an incredibly frank essay on anti-Semitism at http://www.towardtradition.org/our_worst_enemy.htm

His open dialog is a welcome breath of fresh air in an area that is typically full of spin.

Toward Tradition shows can be downloaded here:

http://www.towardtradition.org/talkradio_programs.htm

They show up a few days after the live show. Sometimes a few weeks after.

Would only repeat Bijan B.'s advice- get a tape of the program. Make copies somewhere, possibly at that station. New pundits are always welcome. Freak out station managers during your personnel interviews. A Star Is Born (sniff honk.....)

RE: Pronouncing the name of your effort herein: Make your radio host say it first. Then make a game of the 'proper' pronounciation.

RE: Blogging with nerds on the weekends. Well, if you do that know you will be required to wear high-water pants, a plastic pocket protector, and laugh through your adnoids at non sequiturs.

Well, since you told us to pronounce "Nykol" like "Nicole", I pronounce it "Nicole-ah".

Posted by: Alex at January 28, 2005 6:01 AM

It never occurred to me to pronounce the site's name as anything but "nigh-cola."

Posted by: Dorian Speed at January 28, 2005 8:51 AM

It just sounds so right running around the gray matter: Neeeeeee-coh-laaaah!

Posted by: Steven J. Kelso Sr. at January 28, 2005 11:06 AM

I always imagined it was like :Nick Cola.

Posted by: kimberley at January 28, 2005 1:14 PM

I too must admit that I hear a Yodeler! And I like it that way. The sound of "Neee-KO-Laaa" doesn't make me picture the Alps, though. It makes me think of you as sort of a town crier. You know; colonial look with a brown vest, knickers and a lantern.

Okay, I know I'm wrong. If that ain't a fash'n fox pox, then I don't know what is...

sorry.
