In My World

So I was sitting in a meeting yesterday with the Associate Op-Ed Editor of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, being asked to consider the possibility of becoming a guest editorial columnist and she says the magic words, (and I paraphrase),

"You can write about anything except the topics that have been over-done like social security and the war on Iraq."
I'm so there.

There's a plethora of things to comment on today so check later for updates.

Update (1/25): Clarification. I am not employed yet folks; I'm just a freelancer.

The Post-Intelligencer could use some intelligence. Here's hoping you write lots of editorials and get paid handsomely for your efforts.

Good to see you joining the ranks of the employed again. Makes lots of money and give those in Seattle something to talk about!

Posted by: Greg at January 25, 2005 10:18 AM

Yabba. Dabba. Doo. God closes one door, opens others. Your pundit credentials are being expanded. A blast of sanity in this Lib Dead Tree Journal will be most welcome. Now pursue other full-or-part time employment- at one of the two talk radio stations in your burg competing for the ears of right-thinking God-fearing non-lib Americans. If you write effortlessly, you can sustain three or four hours of radio time yapping on This Or That. But as the P-I editor suggested, not about Iraq or Social Security, please..... (Oh....your prior employer....such a distant memory....)

Yesss!!! Glad the P-I recognizes.

Can you hook a brutha up? HAHAHAHAHAH! Just kidin'! Wonderful news.

A radio show is just around the corner,I feel it in my bones.

Hurray for our side!

Outstanding! Is it a done deal yet?

Huzzah! Congrats, Ambra. This is a HUUGE break. Proud Ambra keep on burnin' ;-)

WOO HOO!! Good for you! What a blessing.

Posted by: marcus at January 25, 2005 12:29 PM

The PI? I wouldn't think that paper would ever offer a position to someone of your political ideology (which, of course, is dead-0n accurate!)

Posted by: Jim at January 25, 2005 12:52 PM

I'm not employed yet people. I'm just a guest op-ed columnist. This is merely freelance work.

Posted by: Ambra Nykol at January 25, 2005 1:08 PM

Ambra:

Yeah, but today the P-I, tomorrow "ABC's This Week With Ambra Nykol". (Gwen Ifill, watch yer back)!

Posted by: Bijan C. Bayne at January 25, 2005 1:25 PM

Hooray for you! This is definitely a step in the right direction. So glad you're getting a chance to keep those splendid skills of yours alive and well. Keep us "post"ed... ~;^)

Posted by: thefoxymama at January 25, 2005 2:24 PM

Yes, you are far too conservative for the Sea PI. Here's wondering if they think you're a democrat since you're black. Hmmmm. Good luck and I could use a write up if you ever get a full gig there. :)

Sounds like it's time to look into syndication, Ambra... I'm sure the Seattle P-I wouldn't mind a bit, but do check on your rights. Angela Hoy over at WritersWeekly.com has some great info on syndicating, check it out. You could be more employed than you realize, and very soon. Good luck!

Posted by: Joan at January 25, 2005 3:24 PM

Well, not employed maybe but this seems like a good first step on a new path. Great to hear about it.
Think of how many people would like to get published, who don't have a newspaper editor who's indicated some interest in their output.

They know I'm not a donkey.

They know I'm not an elephant either.

Maybe that's what makes me unique. All I know is they specifically sought out somebody with a different point of view. I'm game.

Congrats Ambra,

BTW, my paper has cut me loose, so here's to hoping I get me some freelance exposure like you got.

I'll be telling people to look out for your work. I was on a media trip to Whistler a few months back, one of the writers along is a sports columnist with the P-I.

Posted by: Bijan at January 25, 2005 7:00 PM

CONGRATULATIONS, Nykola! I have been reading you for some time, and I am a 65 year old white male conservative! As another poster observed, I am surprised the PI would like you to OPED. You obviously have strong views about sex, abortion, morals, ethics and values. These are NOT issues that the Seattle PI, and Seattle/King County liberals tend to embrace. Perhaps you, and some others like you, can bring some sanity to this very morally and ethically confused part of the world.

GO FOR IT!

Ambra: Did they come to you or did you approach them?

Posted by: mj at January 25, 2005 9:37 PM

mj: They approached me.

Bijan: You went to Whistler for business? I'm jealous. That place is gorgeous.

Posted by: Ambra Nykol at January 25, 2005 10:24 PM

Ambra, I was never that sharp in math. On my trip (and this equation might not be balanced), business=six Canadian golf writers playing a three day "tournament" vs. us six Yanks. More importantly keep up the good work with Seaspot, and your newer venture.

Posted by: Bijan at January 26, 2005 6:34 AM

Congratulations! This is the first step, I'm sure, towards a long and successful career.

Posted by: Fed at January 26, 2005 6:48 AM

They approached you=you're destined for greatness!

Posted by: mj at January 26, 2005 8:19 AM

Congrats! You know you'll get it -- this is an opportunity tailor made for you....mouthy little Republican. YOU GO GIRL!!!! WOOO HOO!!! Knock 'em dead!

Posted by: Carol at January 26, 2005 8:27 AM

Carol:

Slow your roll. Ambra's not a Republican. Read her "elephant-donkey" comment above, and "Why I'm not a Republican" on her homepage. But hats off to her- she's a writin' somebody!

Ambra,

Good to see you back with a "vengance! :o)

But watch those comments "...just a guest op-ed columnist..." and "...merely freelance work..."

Do not "...despise the day of small things..." (Zechariah 4:10) and "Were you a slave when you were called? Don't let it trouble you, although if you can gain your freedom, do so." (1 Corinthians 7:21, NIV)

Be encouraged, my sister,...praying for you:

"I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." (Psalm 37:25)

P.S., Thanks for the great Christmas card!!!

I know, I was teasing. Meant to add a :-) and forgot.

Ambra, this is excellent news. Your talent is going to carry you far.

Ambra, I think that firing thing was a blessing in disguise. You are SO ready for the big time doing commentary for a host of places. Best of luck!
