Column's Up

The Era of the Human Superstar

And not without one minor quibble of a typo that should've been fixed by now-- hopefully this morning sometime. But ya'll are forgving so I trust you won't rake me over the coals. We're still working the kinks out okay, geez. Things like that however, drive a girl who corrects the spelling of others in the "comments section" totally crazy. I know, it's the OCD in me. We're workin' on her....

Per the article, my "Nyktionary" isn't ready yet so for cultural literacy's sake, I offer these vernacular translations:

The "Po-Po": Police officers
"To Rock": To wear, to use, to make do with; usually to great effect. (with umph) (third person conjugation "Rocking", lazy slang "Rockin'")
"To Bump": (multiple meanings), however in the article's case--To play music ridiculously loud.

awww...hold up, though...now why you gotta go and bring AI in there? Especially in the same paragraph with OJ? Even his conviction, which happened when he was in high school, was shady. All the legal issues since then have either been his friends cutting up while in possession of AI's goods (cars, etc.) or unsubstantiated allegations that got more press than they deserved because AI was the accused. The rest of those jokers actually did it. AI's only "crime" is refusing to be corporate.

sorry. iverson's a buzzword for me.

oh yeah...is that you on NWdimes.com? :-)

Avery, I'm co-signing on your Iverson point.

Point taken. The illustration was meant to provoke the reality of celebrities with bad press, not the substantiation of those claims (hence, beginning the article by referencing Kobe).

Chill worshippers.

And Avery you would go to that NWdimes website *shakes head*

Nice one Ambra. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Though I'm with Avery and BH about AI. And I don't even like the man. ;-)

I generally agree with you. I found the celebrations of O.J.'s acquittal, the cheering at Howard U. Law School, on streets, and in front of the L.A. courthouse in bad taste (he did have a violent history with both Nicole and Marguerite). On a less serious note, Paris Hilton did not seek or take any acting, singing, or modeling work from legitimate professionals. The "reality" t.v. series "The Simple Life" approached her, and not the reverse. She has never professed a talent or asked to record a CD. Her publisher approached her. So I don't think she's putting any drama school students or voice majors out of work.

Bijan, I don't think anyone's suggesting she's a threat to acting students. She's a threat to a moral standard. Taken in context, let's not forget what tape they had on HER. MMmmm hmmm.

Anyone who has subjected themselves to "The Simple Life" or even flipped through "Confessions of an Heiress" (her new book) should be able to see that there is indeed, an extreme lack of substance. But what's new.

Ambra, You can't kick the Hilton girl over the tape. All that proves is sicko people(not me)will watch her have sex. And that alone doesn't make her a threat to a moral standard.

Paris Hilton is 6 o'clock. The fact that people will watch her points to a lot.

Ambra is DOB accurate in pointing out that we're a bunch of suckers. All we really need to pay attention to somebody's life is for some media element to tell us that their life is worth watching. We'll gobble it up. That's a problem. That's why I refuse to even own an idiot box, because I don't even want to participate on that level.

Does anyone watching these reality shows really expect the participants to have any substance? These shows are a celebration of Hedonism, and for some people it can be interesting and funny to watch others worship and adore themselves. Especially if you are living a life that's more substantive. You gotta admit Newlyweds is sooo bad, that it's actually good.

Allow me to applaud you virtuosity!

(and the A.I. thing- it's called embracing a thug. Although I think he has matured.)

I only watch the reality shows that appear on MTV (Newlyweds is a guilty pleasure), otherwise most reality shows I have seen outside of MTV have been distant from reality.

MTV has a great video editing department-- they can make the extremely trivial moments of Nick & Jessica's life into an engrossing study of the human psyche. Maybe it just because of my hobby of observing the personal revelation of an individual that attracts me to these 'reality' shows.

Eh, I know I've done this out of order, but I'll go read the article now :P
