New Year Happenings
Ugh. My vacation is over. Back to the grind tomorrow. I'm excited though because I have a big meeting with the head of our restaurant division. I've had a pretty uneventful new year's break. In general, I think new year's is pretty anti-climactic. I'm mean, it's midnight and then what.... So I found out Andre went to a prayer meeting for New Year's. I, on the other hand, partied at a hotel. Boy do I feel like a lame jerk. Leave it to Andre to remind me of my weak personal piety. But I still had fun! I have also already managed to break my new year's resolution (which I never officially made). Big news in Seattle: Snow. Oh my. If only you know how very seldom we get graced with snow's presence. So it's no surprise when half the city shuts down at the sight of two inches of snow. I think we have like 10 snow plows--pretty sad. The snow only lasted a day or so. Now it's just icy roads, which makes for ignorant drivers. You wonder how many piled up and wrecked cars it takes before people realize that maybe going down that big hill isn't a good idea. I spent most of yesterday indoors for this reason. I spent some time in the studio with a few others editing the videos of the retreat. That was fun. And long.
I'm still in denial that this really is Sunday and the end of my 4-day weekend. So today I got humbly rebuked by my pastor. That's always thrilling. Ah, the woes of leadership. An old friend came over for dinner and I found out that we are within 1-year of our high school reunion. That'd be our five-year reunion. I'm sure you can imagine my dismay when I replied, "I'm not ready to see those people yet!" Well, the very thought of this is somewhat troubling me. Only in the world of swanky private schools do they have "5-year high school reunions". I figure, what's the point? At the time most of us will be twiddling our thumbs over what to do with our degree. Any reason to come together and schmooze over our accomplishments I suppose. Well, I will say that I expect big things from my graduating class. They were some smart cookies. Out of a graduating class of like 115, about 50% of them went to Ivy-League schools. Just insane. Too bad it's all worthless without knowledge of our purpose in God. But that's another topic for another time.
Speaking of purpose, our church will soon embark upon the much publicized, "40 Days of Purpose" phenomenon. What shall come of it? Only time will tell. I'll be obedient no matter what. I suppose the fact that the book has ridden the New York Times Best sellers list for ions is more of an indication that people are hungry for purpose now more than ever. Now to that I can give props. But let's not let the Best Sellers list be an indication of what's good and not good. Perfect example: The Prayer of Jabez Um, can we just say Christian Capitalism reared its ugly head. I think it was when I saw the "Prayer of Jabez for Women Calendar" that I thought, "Enough is enough". I want to see lives changed. I don't think it's enough for something just to be "popular" if lives aren't being touched. So that's what I'll be looking for as we embark upon this series. January 18th, I believe is the start date. It happens to also be the start date of another very important moment; that'd be the commercial nightmare that is the American Idol Season Premiere. Yes, I know I know, I should be ashamed of myself. And believe me, I am. Very ashamed. Bad Ambra, very bad. What can I say, "I got hooked sometime last year and haven't looked back since. I'm noticing a very strange and convicting comparison here: 40 Days of Purpose vs. American Idol gee, one seems to edge out the other in importance. So ends the first week of the new year. Largely uneventful; largely important.
